Kristy Edwards first heard about Foundations to Freedom and the life-changing work being done in the community and applied for the position of Executive Assistant’s Assistant. But Katherine Russell, Executive Director and Founder, saw something different in her — a passion for people, connection, and service that would lead her down another path.

Just over two years ago, Kristy joined the team as Events Coordinator. At the time, she didn’t even have a desk and spent much of her time representing Foundations to Freedom by tabling at community events, building relationships, and sharing the organization’s mission with anyone willing to listen.

Today, Kristy serves as Outreach Coordinating Manager, where she not only plans and coordinates events, but also works closely with community organizations and businesses to educate others about recovery and engage support for Foundations to Freedom’s programs and services.

This January marked a major milestone in Kristy’s personal journey — five years of recovery.

Her past year has been filled with incredible accomplishments. Kristy and her husband, who is also in recovery, purchased their first home together. She graduated this month from Daytona State College with her Associate of Arts degree and plans to transfer to the University of Central Florida in the fall to study psychology. She also received an exemption for Level 2 background screening through DCF, another important step forward in her journey.

Kristy is deeply passionate about serving others and connecting people with support and resources for recovery. She hopes to help break the stigma surrounding addiction and remind others that addiction is a disease — and recovery is possible.

Together, Kristy and her husband are raising their four children, ages 24, 21, 15, and 7, while continuing to inspire others through their journey of recovery, resilience, and hope.
